You're right, of course, the "problem" is with a fandom who is too attached to the Star Wars they grew up with to allow any variations. We see the same thing with other stories, with culture, and even with language: you have to speak it the way I do! But Andor is the best example of this--using the central myth to explore a totally different landscape, though one that exists in the very first film, albeit tucked away somewhat. There's room for all kinds of storytelling, since the audience for SF/F is larger than ever. Why not explore it?
