I can relate…when I finished my first novel, and then all the subsequent ones, finishing felt more like defeat. I never felt like I had accomplished anything, and was scared to read back through it, even though I had been revising along the way. And even though every new draft made it better, I never felt that sense of pride or accomplishment in a finished work…I just felt “I should have done better.” But you’re right — it’s about getting to a better place for yourself as a person and a writer. That’s the best you can do.
